MY PRACTICE
I believe in the importance of accepting
that we are human and fallible.
Being an authentic and non-judgmental therapist creates openness, trust and greater self awareness. It leads to personal growth and wellness. We often keep difficult emotions to ourselves, creating a feeling of disconnect and loneliness. I foster a space in which you can feel safe expressing difficult emotions.
I provide tools to enhance your ability to cope, and alternative ways of perceiving yourself and the world. We each have a self narrative, which is often distorted. We tend to filter in our negative experiences and view ourselves through a faulty lens. You and I will do the work to dispute the faulty narrative, change your story and view yourself more positively.
While therapy is serious and topics can be painful, when appropriate I emphasize the importance of humor. One cannot underestimate the physical and mental health benefits of laughter.
CONTINUITY OF CARE
Continuity of care is key to mental health.
When appropriate, and with client consent, I like to connect with the support system. This can include other clinicians, family members and other close relations. This ensures that client’s are provided the care and understanding they need, especially in more complex situations.
“Whether an illness affects your heart, your arm, or your brain, it’s still an illness, and there shouldn’t be any distinction. We would never tell someone with a broken leg that they should stop wallowing and get it together. We don’t consider taking medication for an ear infection something to be ashamed of. We shouldn’t treat mental health conditions any differently. Instead, we should make it clear that getting help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength—and we should ensure that people can get the treatment they need.”
